Abstract/Index
Introduction to Veblen effects. Bagwell and Bernheim’s analysis: signaling status, two types of utility coming from conspicuous consumption: the role of the social contact. From one status recipient to the taxonomy model: how the preferences over different luxury goods indicates to which social class one wants to appeal. Conspicuous consumption as a social device to signal status: experimental evidence of the role of status consciousness and public consumption goods. Does status consumption increase with product’s visibility? Testing how visibility affects preferences and the quality-price relationship of luxury products. Are there other motives for luxury consumption? Independence between extrinsic motivations and intrinsic motivations. Status consumption or conspicuous consumption? Separation and interdependence of concepts. Effects of conspicuous consumption on a large scale on individual’s wellbeing and on the level of resource accumulation of a society. The negative impact of welfare display, effect of Ferraris and Porches purchases in Switzerland on the utility of a municipality or a canton. Macroeconomic effect of quasi-luxury preferences on the economy of one country, impatient versus patient countries.
