The scientific research, theoretical and methodological fundamentals of analysis of democratic backsliding in post-communist countries of the Central and Eastern Europe. Historiography of problem of quality of democracy in countries of CEE. Research methodology and empirical investigation. Comparative case studies. Which implications for the democratic backsliding of the CEE countries had the EU accession and monitoring processes? Copenhagen criteria and the EU accession process. EU monitoring mechanisms in the CEE countries during the process of enlargement. Poland and Hungary as an illustration of illiberal democracy. Hungary’s democratic perspective: a projection on the reforms of Viktor Orbán and the Fidesz party. Democratic backsliding in Poland: illiberal institutionalization. EU mechanisms to counter democratic backsliding and their many limitations. Democratic fatigue in Baltic countries: the main reasons and instances in the context of global democratic deterioration. The nature of democratization of post-communist Baltic states and their adaptation to the EU standards. What are characteristics of the EU policy towards deepening democratization in the Baltic states? Has the EU learnt from its experience in Poland and Hungary for its further rule of law protection, by the case of Lithuania?
