Functions. Description of the role and its functions: the juridical basis that shapes the vice-presidency. Alongside with the institutional tasks: the active political functions covered by the vice to support the president and the party. Overall considerations: vice’s role in relation with the presidency, the three branches of power and the foreign effort. History. A comprehensive overview of every second officer: the history of the 49 vice-pesidents of the United States. Collecting all the V.P. main historical observable common and recurring characteristics through the mandates. Politics. The rise and development of the second officer: how the various actions of an autonomous relationship with the political power of the V.P. changed its figure. The relationship with the president. The relationship with the party and the electorate. An additional factor: the V.P. and the first lady. The V.P. as a presidential asset and symbol, or an able “spare wheel” and rival in the presidential sphere?
