History and structure of the electricity industry and analysis of the functioning of its market. History of the electricity industry over time with a focus on the Italian case. The different types of energy market. How prices are set: system marginal price and pay as bid. Evolution of energy sources over time and the progressive switch towards renewables. Energy communities and analysis of how they contribute to cope with the energy crisis. The global energy crisis and its impact on the energy transition. Energy communities in the world: purpose and legal framework. Energy communities: structure and functioning, main actors, enabling technologies and energy sources. Potential benefits and challenges of RECs. RECs in the world, in Europe and in Italy. Analysis of the possible configurations of REC and of the economic benefits that they may generate on the members. Research question. Incentive schemes and financing methods currently implemented in Italy. Identification of the RECs configurations object of analysis. RECs economic impact analysis.
