The protection of languages within the international legal framework. Language as identity factor and its protection under cultural heritage law. The relation between language and the UNESCO 2003 convention. The 2003 UNESCO convention for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage and the limits for the protection of language at the international level. The 2005 UNESCO convention on cultural diversity. Possible alternatives of protection beyond the cultural heritage law path. A European regional perspective. The Italian case. The evolution of the Italian and regional languages, and the national linguistic policies. Linguistic minorities in Italy. The "super-protected" minorities in special statute regions.
