Understanding the fundamentals of ECB’s independence. Defining ECB’s independence. Measuring central bank’s independence. Some implications of Central Bank independence. Revisiting ECB’s independence in the wake of the great financial crisis. Evolving responsibilities and competencies falling upon the ECB-the development of new tasks as a threat to ECB’s independence. The expansion of the scope of ECB’s activities perceived as a danger to the efficiency of the mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability and an overreach of the institutions into the economic policy of member states. Future directions for the ECB’s independence and mandate. Revisiting ECB’s independence: where do we stand today? Proposals for improving the integration of financial stability into ECB’s monetary policy: addressing concerns from both sides of the debate.
