Breaking down public diplomacy: from general to specific. Dissecting effective public diplomacy. The special subset of public diplomacy: cultural diplomacy. The controversial cultural diplomacy of China. Civil society in China’s public diplomacy. Civil society as official's “side track”. Civil society and public diplomacy. Case studies on the participation of Chinese civil society in cultural diplomacy. Research questions and methodology. From folk belief to global cultural events: the officialization and internationalization of the ritual ceremony to emperor Yan in Baoji region. Religious exchange as the bridge to promote official actions through civil relations: Buddhism exchanges in the normalization of Sino-Japanese relations. Civil exchanges led by the leader: the “Bond with Kuliang” friendship initiative and the Chinese people's association for friendship with foreign countries.
