Introduction to natural gas as an energy. The delimitation of the Eastern Mediterranean and the presence of natural gas fields in this area. The concept of “region” in international relations. The effects of gas on the region: opportunities and challenges for a cohesive regional energy cooperation and an alteration in the perception of the Mediterranean space by regional actors. External influences and dependence on adjacent regional security complexes: the Eastern Mediterranean at a crossroad between Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East and the links of regional gas issues with larger security dynamics.
