The regulatory framework. Shaping the multilateral trading system: from GATT 1947 to GATT 1994. The Dispute settlement understanding (DSU). Section 301 of the US trade act of 1974. Analysis of the world trade organization United States–tariff measures on certain goods from China (DS543). Backdrop of the dispute: the United States conducts investigation 301 and imposes additional tariffs on imports from China. China resorts to the WTO dispute settlement: complaint by China and parties’ requests for findings and recommendations. Panel proceedings and arguments of the parties. Critical analysis of the current challenges within the WTO: from unilateralism to the crisis of the appellate body. Interviews and main comments. Unilateral enforcement tools within the multilateral trading system: the compatibility of section 301 with the DSU. The appellate body crisis: proposals for reform. A general look into the challenges of the WTO: final remarks by the interviewees.
