Theoretical framework. The second demographic transition theory: secularization, individualism and postponement of motherhood. Classical economic theories of fertility. Theories addressing the balance between work and family life. Literature review on the correlation between female labour force participation and fertility. The case study: Italy. Data and methodological approach. Research design. Data and variables. Grouping of regions by female labour force participation levels. Fertility and female labour force participation within regional groups. Empirical analysis: intervening variables in the correlation between female labour force participation and fertility. Cross-regional correlation between fertility and female labour force participation. Fertility trends by female labour force participation groups. Analysis of intervening variables.
