Kaliningrad, historical focal point for Russia’s relations with the West. Kaliningrad during Soviet times (1945-1991). An exclave in post-Soviet Russia (since 1991). Kaliningrad, Western sentinel against NATO’s Baltic Sea expansion. A territory historically coveted for its military significance. Kaliningrad in the contemporary Russia military architecture. Kaliningrad an economic gate to the West limited by state interests. A stark contrast in Kaliningrad’s economic development between the 1990s and the 2000s onwards. Kaliningrad’s place in recent Russian economic developments and interactions with the West.
