Abstract/Index

The aim of this work is to analyze and understand the main features of a precious commodity: the water. The study is organized in 4 chapters. The first describes the water as a human right and as a commodity, and it explains how both concepts coexist. The water is as precious as gold is and so it granted the definition of blue gold. Some scholars may even assume in the future it may be the reason for big conflicts on the earcth. Governances in general tend to consider water as public resource, and it is tradable according its amount of use. To assess the water’s value, it’s necessary to know its cycle, starting from the extraction phase. The extraction is influenced by a series of factors; such as presence of aquifers or bores and mechanisms of pumping out, the latter are explained by theories of Dupuit and Jacob. They show the relationship between extraction’s activities and pollution problems. Then I distinguish among the various types water types according to its uses: the main application regards industrial, agricultural and household contexts. The use at agricultural and industrial level requires a highest amount of water, but it no must be necessarily drinkable, instead household use needs less water’s quantity but it implies only drinkable water. The process of water’s purifying is long and costly. The second chapter puts attention on water distribution, meaning natural distribution and administration of resources related to demographic and governance’s conditions. Globalization and transnationalization are consequences of governance differences, but at the same time they are causes of pricing differentiation. The fluctuation of prices makes difficult to manage water sector, influenced by uncertainty and risks. The pricing mechanism is influenced also by water availability in sufficient quantity and quality; an example may be the disappearance of lake chadin Australia. The third chapter explains the worldwide solution of water sector, including millennium development goals and global water partnership of governments. The water sector is precious and endeavor investments, with high returns and high risks. Australia represents an example of emerging water market. The fourth chapter draws some conclusions.
